Alex Daniel Goolsby Scholarship

Financial Aid/Scholarships The Alex Daniel Goolsby Scholarship was established by John L. Goolsby, The Donald W. Reynolds Foundation and the family of Alex Daniel Goolsby to benefit high school seniors that will graduate from Bowie High School.

Alex grew up in Arlington, Texas and attended Martin High School. Alex’s interest was in languages. He spent his senior year in East Germany as an exchange student. Alex attended the University of Texas at Austin for three years and graduated in 1995 with honors in history and German. He was selected as a UT Normandy Scholar and traveled to France in his last semester. He also spent a summer learning Spanish in Cuernavaca, Mexico. For a year and a half he lived in Madrid Spain and taught Spanish at the Open School of Languages. Alex also lived in Paris and Toulouse, France, studying French and translating.

After 1992, Alex did volunteer work with five different agencies. At the time of his death on June 25, 1997 Alex was taking classes at UT Austin with plans to become a pharmacist or physician, recognizing the need for bilingual medical professionals in Texas. The Alex Daniel Goolsby Scholarship celebrates his appreciation of literature, philosophy, languages, history, and travel; his insatiable curiosity; and his passion for learning.

Out of their own dedication to education, both of Alex’s parents, and his sister Jennifer Alexander set up this scholarship to provide opportunities for exceptional students from Bowie High School that plan to attend UTA, where Hannah Goolsby, Alex’s mother taught for many years. Dr. Roger Goolsby, served as a professor of mechanical engineering and materials science and engineering at UTA. In addition, Alex’s Uncle, John L. Goolsby, graduated with a degree in business from UTA and was honored as a UT Arlington Distinguished Business Leader in 1994 and a Distinguished Alumnus in 1998.

Applicants must be seniors in the top 30% of their class from Bowie High School that plan to attend UTA full-time the following fall after graduation. This scholarship is renewable for up to three additional years if the student maintains full-time status and a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher.
